When I was in high school, I had a full load of Honors and AP classes, a brochure from Duke University taped to the back of my door, and what I can only assume was the beginning of a premature ulcer. Some people say high school was the best 4 years of their life (who are these people?), but it was NOT fun for me. And spoiler alert: I never did make it to Duke.
I’ve found out that my story isn’t all that unique. There a lot of ridiculously smart and hard-working girls out there. Girls killing themselves taking the most challenging classes and programs available. Girls on multiple sports teams, playing with injuries, and spending their weekends traveling for games. And a lot of them, like me, end up burning out before their lives even get started.
This is not okay with me. These are some of the most brilliant minds of our generation. We need these girls! We need them in our labs, we need them in our boardrooms, and we need them in our government. We cannot have our brightest stars burning out before they get their chance to make their mark on the world.
